What’s wrong with sticking to your guns?

One of the biggest misconceptions of our times is, newer is always better. In my line of work, along with most lines of work, this is both true and false.  Not everyone is capable of change, and in some cases there are those who are resistant to it. But there are those who also accept it and follow the tides. Either way a decision has to be made whether the outcome is good or bad.  What I don’t agree with is someone just giving in and letting the “tail wag the dog.”  This has been the case in wine for quite some time, and I’m going to speak out about it.

In 1982, Bordeaux had what some would say is one of their best vintages ever. Around that time a man by the name of Robert Parker would hit the wine scene and be one of the most influential spokes persons for the 1982 Bordeaux.  Needless to say, he was right about the vintage and the great wines that were produced from it, and from that point on the rest, as they say, became history. Terre di Sava “Luccarelli” Negroamaro IGT 2010

Terre di Sava “Luccarelli” Negroamaro

IGT 2010

Puglia, located in Italy’s southeast section, is 217 miles long. Exceedingly warm in the summer time, it is the “heel” of the boot that is Italy. Lucarelli wines are crafted in a large, ultra-modern facility called Terre di Sava, in the village of Sava, which is a stone’s throw from the town of Manduria – the heart of the Primitivo di Manduria zone. Just down the road is Salice Salentino, then the more major city of Lecce. In the area of Manduria, Primitivo reigns while in Salice Salentino the main grape is Negroamaro, said to have dominated the Salice vineyard since the 6th Century BC. Lucarelli’s ancient vines are tended by farmer-owners and average 80 years old, planted in iron-rich soils with calcareous bedrock. These naturally low yielding old vines are hand harvested and farmed sustainably.

A perfect match for the season… Luccarelli NegroamaroThis month Colonial Spirits offers a red wine with warming fruit and a fresh feel.  Luccarelli brings some richness, but is still soft enough to provide an easy transition from the wines of summer to the heaver winter wines we’ll be enjoying all too soon. As our wine of the month there is special pricing, making this wine impossible to resist.  Try it today for only $9.99 per bottle!  Special case price of $90

Session Beer

I doubt that I am breaking any news addressing the “session” trend in beer, but it is noteworthy, and, in my opinion, quite exciting.  There are many recent trends in beer that we can recall.  The onslaught of Pumpkin beer is in our face now.  Oak aged beer, imperial ales, double IPA, ‘brett’ beer… all came on strong and have left their mark on the beer world.  The slowly developing session trend is the best yet.

American brewers are among the best in the world and their skill shines through in every category of brew.  Putting that skill towards the creation of the bold flavors that beer lovers crave –and that won’t keep you out of work the next day– is a commendable feat.  Beer is a fine accompaniment to a meal and serves as a fantastic sharing experience with friends.  The option to enjoy fine flavors repeatedly over the course of an evening is something our friends across the pond have been choosing for years.  After all, England is the spiritual home of session beer. The Ardbeg Rocket Tour!

Friday, October 12th from 4-7pm

Along with a massive rocket we will be showing an incredible line up from Ardbeg:

10yr, Corryvreckan, Uigeadail and… well, you will just have to find out for yourself

If you are not a fan already, it is time to become one.  Ardbeg is just so good.  Revered around the world as the peatiest, smokiest, most complex single malt of them all. Yet it does not flaunt the peat; rather it gives way to the natural sweetness of the malt to produce a whisky of perfect balance.  Typically most whiskies are chill-filtered and reduced to a strength of 40% ABV. Ardbeg Ten Years Old, however, is non chill-filtered and has a strength of 46% ABV, thus retaining maximum flavour, at the same time giving more body and added depth.
